Hunting Island Guided Kayak Trip
April 22-28, 2007
$1295 per person, double occupancy (includes all taxes)
Hunting Island is a State Park located midway between Charlestown, SC and Savannah, GA. The island is approximately three miles long and one mile wide, encompassing 5000 acres of sandy beach, maritime forest and saltwater marsh. This large barrier island provides refuge to several species of flora and fauna, and it will also provide refuge for us as a base camp, from which we will do our day trips.
The majority of our paddling is done right from the island or within a ten-minute drive. Our options include “the lagoon," the Harbor River, Johnson Creek, Fripp Inlet, and the Atlantic Ocean. We encounter all types of wildlife including deer, raccoon, waterfowl, heron, and “the park alligator” during our paddles . We also explore the salt marsh ecosystem: an ecosystem rich in nutrients that provides food and shelter for many different life forms. A couple of the highlights of this trip are the opportunities to paddle with dolphins and to be able to learn surf landings and launches in a very friendly environment. The dolphins are numerous in the rivers and Atlantic, and will often swim up to you to take a closer look. And, because of the protected surf zones, the surf is usually very manageable, even for beginners.
We also leave the island to explore the Pinkney National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). This refuge, located just outside of Hilton Head Island, encompasses 4053 acres of primitive coastal habitats and plays a vital role in wildlife protection for the region. It provides a haven for threatened and endangered bird species including the southern bald eagle, peregrine falcon, and wood stork. Pinkney NWR provides us with a beautiful and fascinating environment to explore by kayak and by foot. We paddle Mackay Creek in the morning and explore the various foot trails in the afternoon. And back at camp you can also explore the trails through the slash pine/palmetto forest, check out the lighthouse (the only one in South Carolina still open to the public), fish for several species, or beach comb.
Our “base camp” for this adventure is a beach house on Hunting Island. Here we are centrally located and have all the amenities of home, and then some. You are provided all meals; breakfast and dinner is family style at the house. Lunch is deli style and is taken with us each day so we can eat on or near the water.
Kayaking is an activity that any reasonably fit person can enjoy. This tour is for novice paddlers but even the seasoned paddler will enjoy what Hunting Island offers. Basic safety and paddling instruction is provided on day 1, with more instruction if there is interest. You should be in good health and accustomed to regular exercise. Spring time weather on Hunting Island can be variable, to say the least. Expect lows from the 50’s - 70’s and highs from the 60’s - 80’s. Depending on the weather, bugs can also be a large factor.
The cost of the trip includes kayak, paddling accessories, lodging and all meals. Not included in the cost is land or air transportation to Hunting Island, alcoholic beverages, gratuities for the guides, or medical expenses due to injury or illness.
There are a minimum number of participants required to confirm this tour. Therefore please do not make any travel arrangements (airline flights, train) until you have received confirmation from us that the trip has fully booked. A 50% deposit is due at time of reservation, with payment in full due 60 days prior to the trip’s start date. Email us or call 315-335-1681 to reserve your spot.
