Florida's Nature Coast Guided Kayak Trip (Three-Day)

December 18 - 20, 2010
$449 per person, double occupancy (includes all taxes)

Taking a paddling break along the Florida Nature Coast Kayak Trail

The Nature Coast Canoe and Kayak Trail follows the Gulf Coast of Florida from Crystal River to the Chassahowitzka River. The trail takes a paddler through some of the most pristine salt marshes in the Southeast and generally features protected calm waters with some potentially strong tidal flows through state preserve lands. The paddler will be rewarded with white pelicans, wood storks, manatees and frequent dolphin encounters in some of the protected bays. The trail also provides a great adventure for those interested in bird watching! So bring your binoculars and enjoy birding at its best!

Our trip begins at the Chassahowitzka Hotel in Chassahowitzka, Florida, where we will enjoy dinner and lodging at the hotel before heading out the next morning. On the first paddling day we head down the Chassahowitzka River and paddle to Homosassa Springs where we spend the night in waterside cabins at the Seagrass River Resort. You can choose to cook in your cabin or enjoy dinner at the restaurant on the premises. On the following day our last leg takes us back down the Homosassa River and then north to Crystal River, where we are picked up at the takeout and brought back to our cars.

This trip is designed for paddlers with some previous experience. You should be in good health and accustomed to regular exercise. The cost of the trip includes kayak, paddling accessories, lodging, local transportation, lunches and the first night's dinner. Not included in the cost is air or land transportation to Crystal River, Florida, any meals not previously mentioned, alcoholic beverages, gratuities for the guides, or medical expenses due to injury or illness.

There is a minimum number of participants required to confirm this tour. Therefore please do not make any travel arrangements (airline flights, train) until you have received confirmation from us that the trip has fully booked. A 50% deposit is due at time of reservation, with payment in full due 30 days prior to the trip’s start date. Please email us or call (315) 335-1681 to reserve your spot. Cedar Key Guided Kayak Trip (Five-Day)

February 21 - 25, 2011
$795 per person (all taxes included)

Group photo from Cedar Key Florida Guided Kayak TripJoin us for five full days of paddling and relaxing in the historic village of Cedar Key on Florida’s nature coast. Come enjoy the great kayaking, history, and seafood the area has to offer! Cedar Key is nestled in the big bend region of the Gulf of Mexico, and invites visitors to come and see what’s left of Florida’s natural heritage. Excellent opportunities exist to get an up close and personal view of all the wildlife that abounds in the rivers, salt marshes, tidal creeks, natural springs and coastal islands. While there you may see ibis, herons, pelicans, osprey, eagles, dolphins, manatees and many other rare and elusive species.

Our daily paddles take place in various locations that will change dependant on the winds and tides. Some of the places that we may explore include the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge, Lower Suwannee National Wildlife and the Wacasassa Bay State Preserve. The Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge is the star of this trip. It offers everything from mud flats paddling to beachcombing on sandy beaches. While paddling “the keys” you’ll most likely see eagles, ospreys and potentially dolphins frolicking alongside your boat. In the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge we put-in near the Shell Mound: an interesting ancient Indian site that you can explore via interpretive signs and trails. While paddling in this area we can see oyster fisherman at work as well as several species of waterfowl. Wacasassa Bay State Preserve is where we go in search of the not so elusive (at times) American alligator.

Beach lunch on the Cedar Key Florida Guided Kayak TripKayaking is an activity that any reasonably fit person can enjoy. This tour is designed for beginning paddlers, and basic paddling and safety instruction will be given at the beginning of the trip. You should be in good health and accustomed to regular exercise. The cost of the trip includes kayak, paddling accessories, local transportation, lunches and two dinners. Not included in the cost is air or land transportation to Cedar Key, Florida, lodging, any meals not previously mentioned, alcoholic beverages, gratuities for the guides, or medical expenses due to injury or illness. Due to the popularity of Cedar Key and the difficulty in finding last-minute lodging, we highly urge those interested in this trip to book as far as possible in advance (1 year in advance is not too much notice). Since this trip is five full days of paddling, you should plan to arrive the day before the trip begins and depart the day after the trip ends.

Big Bend of Florida Guided Kayak Trip (Five-Day)

February 27 - March 5, 2011
$1095 per person, double occupancy (all taxes included)
$1395 per person, single occupancy (all taxes included)

This trip, based in Steinhatchee, Florida, will take you to parts of Florida that most folks don’t realize still exist.  Steinhatchee is located in the "Big Bend" of Florida at the mouth of the Steinhatchee River where the river flows into the Gulf of Mexico, placing it in the very heart of the Nature Coast.  It is about 90 miles south of Tallahassee and approximately 70 miles west of Gainesville.  This small Florida community was at one time a small commercial fishing village where most of the residents worked in the fishing or timber logging industry.

During the week we will paddle in coastal creeks, rivers and the Gulf of Mexico.  Most of the area is part of the Big Bend State Wildlife Refuge and is very remote.  We will also be able to visit campsites that are on the Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail.  Along the way we’ll have the opportunity to see all kinds of birdlife, as well as wild turkeys, wild hogs, and alligators.  The water access and diversity of waterways in this area will leave you wondering why more people haven’t found this paddlers’ paradise.

The 6 nights of lodging for this trip will be at the Steinhatchee River Inn.  The rooms have kitchenettes so that you’ll be able to prepare some of your own food.   Steinhatchee is a small town with limited dining facilities (2 restaurants), so don’t expect Disney World!

Kayaking is an activity that any reasonably fit person can enjoy.  This tour is designed for beginning paddlers, and basic paddling and safety instruction will be given at the beginning of the trip.  You should be in good health and accustomed to regular exercise. The cost of the trip includes kayak, paddling accessories, lodging, local transportation, lunches and two dinners.  Not included in the cost is air or land transportation to Steinhatchee, Florida, any meals not previously mentioned, alcoholic beverages, gratuities for the guides, or medical expenses due to injury or illness.

Group photo from the Everglades National Park, Ten Thousand Island Region in FloridaSpend five full days paddling and camping in the northern region of the Everglades "10,000 Islands Region!" This trip takes you into the winding mangrove waterways along the coast, as well as out to the pristine white sandy beaches that are scattered throughout the region. Padding the Gulf of Mexico waters as we island-hop,we'll be looking out for dolphins, rays, and a wide array of birds including osprey, bald eagle, anhinga, roseate spoonbill, herons, and egrets. Many of the islands of this region were originally shell mounds created by the Calusa Indians, and over time these islands grew to be quite large. White sand beaches stretch along many of these islands and offer inviting lunch and camp sites. During our paddles and nights in camp you’ll also learn about the Everglade’s colorful history as the “last frontier” – a history not so far away in time that includes alligator hunters, drug runners, and murderers!

Our four nights will be spent at campsites at various island beach and ground sites. After setting up camp, there is plenty of time to explore the islands, go shell-hunting, read a book, or fish the flats for the redfish, sea trout, and snook the Everglades are famous for. The evenings are spent enjoying dinner, watching the sunset, and relaxing by the campfire.

Suwannee River Wilderness Trail Expedition Kayak Trip - 6 Day Trip
February 13- 18, 2011
$895 per person, all taxes included

The 170 miles Suwannee River Wilderness Trail begins in White Springs, FL. Here you will find the upper Suwannee narrow and flowing through towering pines and stately cypress that line the river banks and high bluffs. The slow current makes it ideal for beginners to get down the river without having to exhaust themselves.

The middle stretch from Suwannee River State Park to the town of Branford is spring country. The river widens, with numerous springs an small shoals adding to its character. On hot days, spring hopping is a popular pastime for paddlers and boaters who stop to enjoy a cool dip in the clear spring waters.

Camping along the Suwannee is in the new river camps that the state of Florida is building. These river camps are hardly camping to some! They have screened in sleeping rooms, complete with a light and ceiling fan. Other amenities include bath houses with flush toilets, hot showers, picnic tables, electric outlets and running water, right next to your campsite! This is a great introduction to camping without needed to "rough it."

Day 1 - Run the shuttle early in the morning, pack boats, and paddle to Woods Ferry River Camp (13 miles)
Day 2 - Paddle to Holton Creek River Camp (18.4 miles)
Day 3 - Paddle to Dowling Park River Camp (27.9 miles)
Day 4 - Paddle to Peacock Slough River Camp (17.2 miles)
Day 5 - Layover for one day, or paddle to Adams Tract River Camp (10.3 miles if we paddle)
Day 6 - Paddle to Ivey Memorial Park in Branford and take out. If we paddled the day before it will be 9.5 miles, if not it will be 19.8 miles.

The 10,000 Islands Region of the Everglades is well known for its fishing, camping and kayaking, so why not combine them for a fantastic vacation! Our top priority on these week-long vacations is catching fish, and kayaks are our mode of transportation to the camping and fishing spots.
