Sea of Cortez Islands Eight-Day Expedition Kayak Trip
January 18 - 25, 2009
US $1345 per person (all taxes included)
The Sea of Cortez, youngest on the planet's surface, was formed when two tectonic plates began separating nearly twenty-five million years ago. Along the shoreline of the rapidly filling gulf, tremendous mountain ranges and islands were thrown up by movement along the San Andreas Fault and accompanying volcanic activity. One of the most spectacular sections of this rugged coast lies beneath the towering basalt escarpments of the Sierra de las Gigantas. Offshore, the blue waters are pierced by the jagged shapes of Danzante and Carmen islands, both uninhabited wildlife sanctuaries in Baja California‘s newest national marine park. From our launch site near the base of the Sierra de las Gigantas, we paddle into the Sea of Cortez spending most of a week exploring Islas Danzante and Carmen. Red-hued desert colors, azure blue water and magical landforms give this area great aesthetic and photographic appeal. Paddling a sea kayak in these waters offers exceptional opportunities for viewing marine mammals including dolphins, sea lions and with a bit of luck, fin and blue whales - the largest mammals on earth! And there's no shortage of sea birds: we'll see blue-footed boobies, high flying frigatebirds, osprey, and squadrons of pelicans soaring above on the lookout for fish as we paddle to our next camp.
This trip includes six days of expedition kayaking, with beach camping on various islands along route. Average daily paddles are around four hours per day (with breaks and lunch stop),
and camping is in comfortable and roomy dome tents. Each day we will have time to explore the scenic islands and their beaches which offer superb swimming, tide pooling, strolling, and snorkeling. In addition, several campsites have a desert arroyo hike which will give us spectacular views as well as a great opportunity to explore some of the desert flora unique to Baja.
You will need to arrive in Loreto one day prior to the trip. You will be greeted by our ground service and transported to our hotel in Loreto. You will have the day free to check into your pre-assigned rooms, sight-see, and shop, and there will be a pre-trip meeting in the evening in the hotel lobby. After the last day’s paddle, we will unpack and proceed back to our hotel (hot showers!) in Loreto for one night. Our ground service will provide transportation to the airport the following day.
