Northern Patagonia: Limay River from Bariloche to Alicura 7-day Kayak Trip

January 11 - 17, 2009
US $1095 per person (includes all taxes)

The Limay River in the northwestern part of Argentina is part of the natural drainage area of Lake Nahuel Hupai (or "Tiger Island" in the Mapuche aborigine tongue), which then joins the Neuquen River to form the Negro River, and further empties into the Atlantic Ocean. "Limay" means "crystal-clear" in the Mapuche tongue. During our trip we will sea kayak down the river, camping along the way. We will also explore native towns, archaeological sites, enjoy native food, and may even have time to catch one of the monster brown trout that this Limay is known for.

Our first day begins at the headwaters of the Limay River, where we become acquainted with our kayaks and the rest of the group while we pack our boats up. Basic paddling and safety instruction will be taught at the beginning of the trip. On the next day, we stop at a ranch and take part in an archaelogical excavation to learn more about the Patagonian past. That night we will enjoy a typical Patagonian barbecue. The next morning, we prepare our kayaks to continue exploring this steppe river. After lunch, we approach the Enchanted Valley, with strange rock formations that make it a unique spot. After a pleasant day, we reach the place where the Limay and Traful rivers meet. The following day, we leave behind the Enchanted Valley to kayak the last section of the river, where the Limay rapids could once be rafted prior to the building of the dam. The water will feel heavier, marking our entry to the lake, our last "host." We will kayak quite close to a trout hatchery. Trout were first brought to the region from the northern hemisphere back in 1903. We will search for a nice spot to camp and spend the night under a starry sky. On our finaly day, we stop at a ghost town that was home to 7000 souls during the construction of the dam. Upon our arrival to the dam, we climb onboard a van to mark the end of our expedition with our return trip to the town of Bariloche. construction of the dam. Upon our arrival to the dam, we take a shuttle back to the town of Bariloche.
