Cedar Key, FL Kayak Trips

"I was very much the beginner when I first kayaked with Scott at Cedar Key.  Over the course of the week I paddled with dolphins, met manatees in the wild and spotted countless numbers of birds. And every evening I enjoyed a hot shower, a cold beer and a delicious seafood dinner at a local “old Florida” eatery. Although my boat felt a little “tippy” that first day, by the end of the week I laughed at whitecaps and the sea breeze in my face."
"I’ve done the Cedar Key trip three times over the years, and I’d do a fourth.  If you want an adventure on your next vacation, paddle with Scott."

Cedar Key Lodge Based Kayak Trip
2013 Dates: February 18-22, March 4-8 and March 18-22
$795 per person

Join us for five full days of paddling and relaxing in the historic village of Cedar Key on Florida’s nature coast. Come enjoy the great kayaking, history, and seafood the area has to offer! Cedar Key is nestled in the big bend region of the Gulf of Mexico, and invites visitors to come and see what’s left of Florida’s natural heritage. Excellent opportunities exist to get an up close and personal view of all the wildlife that abounds in the rivers, salt marshes, tidal creeks, natural springs and coastal islands. While there you may see ibis, herons, pelicans, osprey, eagles, dolphins, manatees and many other rare and elusive species.

Our daily paddles take place in various locations that will change dependant on the winds and tides. Some of the places that we may explore include the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge, Lower Suwannee National Wildlife and the Wacasassa Bay State Preserve. The Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge is the star of this trip. It offers everything from mud flats paddling to beachcombing on sandy beaches. While paddling “the keys” you’ll most likely see eagles, ospreys and potentially dolphins frolicking alongside your boat. In the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge we put-in near the Shell Mound: an interesting ancient Indian site that you can explore via interpretive signs and trails. While paddling in this area we can see oyster fisherman at work as well as several species of waterfowl. Wacasassa Bay State Preserve is where we go in search of the not so elusive (at times) American alligator.

Cedar Key Archaeological Multi-Sport Vacation
2013 Dates: February 25 - March 1
$795 per person

There is no doubt that Cedar Key offers endless paddling opportunities but the area also offers much more.  This trip offers paddling, hiking, history, ranger led programs and birding.

Sample itinerary (itineraries are subject to weather and tides):
Day 1 – Is a kayaking trip in the Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge.  Along the way we’ll stop on sandy beaches and hike into the interior of Atsena Otie Key to see the remnants of the original Cedar Key.
Day 2- In the morning we explore the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge by foot and van.  The refuge has an incredible bird list as well as several viewing areas for alligators.  In the afternoon we meet a Refuge Ranger at an ancient Indian Shell Mound for a cultural plant and weapons program which includes demonstrations and many visual aids.
Day 3- Is an off island experience to kayak with the Crystal River manatees in the morning. In the afternoon we visit the Crystal River Archeological State Park. This prehistoric site is thousands of years old and includes features not found anywhere else in North America.
Day 4- Relax in the morning and/ or visit the Cedar Key State Museum.  In the early afternoon we will tour a local clam farm.  Cedar Key is one of largest exporters of farm raised clams in the country.
Day 5- We head back to the Shell Mound area for a kayak tour.  This area is notorious for visiting dolphins to swim along with you and your kayak.

Kayaking and hiking are activities that any reasonably fit person can enjoy. These tours is designed for beginning paddlers, and basic paddling and safety instruction will be given at the beginning of the trip. You should be in good health and accustomed to regular exercise.
